Keyways' winemaker David Raffaele developed a passion for wine while living in Italy for nearly six years. As a writer and photographer, he spent a lot of time in the Italian countryside absorbing the culture while attempting to capture the "essence" of Mediterranean living. It was only a matter of time before David discovered and became enamored with Italy's prolific and enduring wine legacy.
After returning to the United States, David soon realized that California also harbored a flourishing wine industry and sought out an apprenticeship at Maurice Car'rie Vineyard and Winery in Temecula Valley. Under the tutelage of award-winning winemaker Gus Vizgirda, David learned the art and science behind great winemaking. He supplemented his hands-on training with formal educations in wine chemistry and viticulture. After more than three years as an apprentice, David was selected as the new winemaker for Keyways.
David's focus lies in producing limited-production, hand-crafted wines that emphasize Temecula Valley’s unique terroir, while exuding style, varietal expression and depth.
